Security has been tightened at Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray’s residence Matoshree as a precautionary measure on Sunday after calls were received on the landline at Matoshree late Saturday night wherein the caller said he was calling on behalf of wanted gangster and 1993 Mumbai serial blasts accused Dawood Ibrahim and wanted to speak to the chief minister, police said.

“Calls were made to Matoshree landline. The caller said he was calling from Dubai and he was calling on behalf of Dawood Ibrahim. The caller had told the receptionist to connect him to the CM as Dawood wants to speak to him directly. Two calls were received and the receptionist disconnected both calls without forwarding it to anyone,” a senior police official told news agency ANI. He further said that there were no specific threats given by the caller.

Security has also been beefed up at Varsha, the official residence of the chief minister, as well. State agencies also have been put on a high alert. The Mumbai Police said they are trying to locate the caller.

The security cover of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, his son and Yuva Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray, and other members of the family has also been increased by the police department.

Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Anil Parab confirmed that an anonymous call was received at Matoshree where the caller said he was a handmaiden of Dawood Ibrahim and wanted to speak to the chief minister. He said that security was indeed beefed up.

However, Pakistan later stepped back on its own admission, after which the MEA said that the “subsequent denial by Pakistan’s foreign office, calls into question their intentions and it would not mislead the world community in believing in its propaganda. Pakistan must take credible action and ensure that listed individuals are prosecuted.”

Ibrahim was declared as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist in 2003 by the US. India has repeatedly asked the Government of Pakistan to hand over Ibrahim to India so that he can be prosecuted for the crimes committed by him. It was reported that Ibrahim is based in tony Clifton neighbourhood of Karachi.
